{"id":767,"date":"2020-10-20T14:26:21","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T10:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mcmmediahub.aus.edu\/?p=767"},"modified":"2026-05-11T12:46:59","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T08:46:59","slug":"though-interrupted-by-pandemic-plastic-ban-off-to-good-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcmediahub.aus.edu\/index.php\/2020\/10\/20\/though-interrupted-by-pandemic-plastic-ban-off-to-good-start\/","title":{"rendered":"Though interrupted by pandemic, plastic ban off to good start"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Tuqa Al Ayoubi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH \u2013 While the Covid-19 pandemic closed the American University of Sharjah soon after its ban on single-use plastics was underway, AUS Sustainability\u2019s efforts still resulted in positive steps toward making the campus more environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AUS announced in Fall 2019 it would ban single-use plastic beginning in January.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Head of Sustainability Rose Armour, interviewed recently, her department worked with all vendors on campus last fall to change to more sustainable products. These included reducing single-use plastic use and sales, but also in charging for plastic bags.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, her office worked to educate students, faculty and staff about the need to adjust behavior and consumption, efforts that included distributing refillable flasks and reusable bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While campus closed in mid-March, according to Armour early results showed a difference in people\u2019s behavior.
