{"id":2984,"date":"2022-03-07T08:51:06","date_gmt":"2022-03-07T04:51:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mcmmediahub.aus.edu\/?p=2984"},"modified":"2026-05-11T12:46:55","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T08:46:55","slug":"social-distancing-rules-not-always-followed-students-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcmediahub.aus.edu\/index.php\/2022\/03\/07\/social-distancing-rules-not-always-followed-students-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Social distancing rules not always followed, students say"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Noel Ceriani<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH \u2013 Even though the American University of Sharjah has enforced strict coronavirus guidelines on campus since the return to in-person teaching Jan. 31, not all students have been following through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is visible on campus, and students interviewed in February readily acknowledged it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really hard to social distance when we need to get in contact with other students and professors,\u201d said AUS student Hanaa Sadoun. \u201cPersonally, it\u2019s unintentional if I don\u2019t social distance.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about the guidelines, Director of University Health Services Lubna Alsaraj said, \u201cWe continually remind students, faculty, and staff to wear masks and practice social distancing.&nbsp; As a member of a university community we expect everyone to have a commitment to not only their own health and safety but also to their fellow community members.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While AUS faculty may feel that students are being responsible with following social distancing guidelines, students themselves think otherwise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNobody social distances at all. We are all vaccinated so that\u2019s good, but vaccinated people can still get COVID and if one gets it then it can spread,\u201d said AUS student Reem Mugharbel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for masks, \u201cwhen it comes to the Student Center people don\u2019t wear them unless they are entering, that\u2019s the only time they tell you to put the mask on, after that it is up to you,\u201d added Mugharbel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AUS student and Resident Assistant Dana Maalouf<strong> <\/strong>said the problem is that the university used to report COVID cases on campus, but because they don\u2019t anymore people don\u2019t fear the virus, as they\u2019re not informed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn some classes some students don\u2019t put a mask on. At the start of the semester people followed the rules more but now people are bored and are done with covid so they don\u2019t think it\u2019s an issue anymore,\u201d Maalouf added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student Council President Othman Ahmed said, \u201cas long as cases are high the students will have to take it seriously, but for now they are taking it lightly.
