UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – Students should position themselves in the “spotlight of opportunity” rather than waiting for job postings, junior finance student and founder of several organizations at the American University of Sharjah Yousef Naser advised at an Academic Support Center workshop Tuesday.
Drawing from his experience as an AUS student who held several campus leadership roles, Naser encouraged attendees to stop relying on formal announcements and instead build relationships within university departments.
Naser said staying active within departments can help students build relationships, gain experience and learn about upcoming opportunities before they are publicly advertised.
He emphasized that bringing high energy and professional presentation to daily interactions leaves a positive first impression on others.
“When you are the person who’s bringing energy to the room, you are wanted to be in that room more often,” Naser said. “Each thing you do, use it as a step, not as an end, not as a wall … Stop leading with old achievements and old positions.”
Reflecting on his key message, Naser offered a final piece of advice.
“Opportunities are out there,” Naser said. “There’s always something for you in AUS.”
